Why Gift Cards are Budget-Friendly

The holiday season is a time for joy and giving, but that doesn't mean you need to stretch your budget to the breaking point. That's why gift cards are such a smart choice—they let you spend exactly what you can afford. Gift card gifting is more budget-friendly than traditional gifting, where it's all too easy to overshoot your budget due to rising prices or the challenge of finding the perfect gift at the right price. But that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice thoughtfulness and bow-worthy presentations.

As your consumer guide to gift cards and someone who understands the need to stretch a dollar, I'm here to share my insights on selecting gift cards that are both personal and presentable. You don't need to spend extravagantly, but rather take a thoughtful approach to what you give. Then apply my 'Whole Gift Rule' to ensure your gift card fully covers a meaningful gift, whether it’s a dinner out, a shopping spree, or a simple service. It’s a straightforward concept that’s easy to follow.

Here’s how you can make a big impression with budget-friendly gift cards in just three simple steps:

3 Steps to Thoughtful (Budget-friendly!) Gifts

Creating the perfect gift doesn’t have to be a splurge. All you have to do is set your budget, follow the Whole Gift Rule in picking an appropriate gift card, and, optionally, pair it with a little something extra. By following these three simple steps, you can ensure each gift card you give is both considerate and cost-effective.

Let’s get started:

1. Establish Your Budget

Determine upfront how much you are comfortable spending. This first step is crucial for keeping your holiday spending in check. However, it's equally important to consider what will make the gift card a whole gift for the recipient, meaning they can enjoy it without spending additional money.

I recall discussing this concept with a reporter years ago who aptly remarked, "Yeah, otherwise it's just a coupon." That analogy perfectly captures the essence of the idea—if the gift card requires the recipient to spend their own money, then it essentially functions as a discount coupon rather than a true gift.

So, what's the best gift card amount? Statistics vary, suggesting people spend anywhere from $24 to $50 on average. However, my rule is that the ideal amount is what you can comfortably afford while ensuring it's sufficient for the recipient to purchase a complete item or experience. When applying the Whole Gift Rule, consider the activities or items the recipient enjoys. For instance, if they are avid readers, ensure the gift card amount covers the cost of at least one or two new hardcover bestsellers or several paperbacks at their favorite bookstore.

Based on these guidelines, choose your preferred gift card dollar amount and move on to step 2.

2. Select an Appropriate Gift Card ("Whole Gift Rule")

Next, we need to align the dollar amount of the gift card with the cost of goods and services the recipient can buy with the gift card. As noted above, this is my Whole Gift Rule.

For example, a $25 gift card to a local diner might cover a full meal, but it likely won't stretch far at a high-end department store. Similarly, a $50 gift card might buy a couple of movie tickets or a few months of a streaming service, but it would not go far on travel services like airlines, cruises, or hotels. It’s important to match the recipient's interests with your budget—and select accordingly.

Consider the hobbies and interests of the recipient

Then obviously, you want to select a gift card you know the recipient will enjoy. For example, if you want to buy a gift card for someone who enjoys playing golf, the amount on the gift card can vary significantly depending on the golf-related experience you want to cover: Here are some examples.

  • Sporting Goods Gift Card for $25-50: For someone who enjoys golf, like my boys, a $25 gift card to a sporting goods store or golf shop can buy a pack of tees, a sleeve of golf balls, or other inexpensive essentials. About $50 might cover a golf hat or a shirt, if there is a sale.
  • Golf Course Gift Card for $50-75: The average cost of green fees in the United States is around $43. A gift card between $50 and $75 could cover the cost of a round of golf, including cart fees and perhaps a snack.
  • Golf Entertainment Gift Card for $100+: For an experience like a visit to Top Golf, a gift card of around $100 would generally cover the cost of bay rental, any potential membership fees for new players, and some food, providing a complete experience without additional expenses.

These examples show how to ensure a gift card aligns with the recipient's interests and the importance of adhering to the Whole Gift Rule to choose a gift that fits both your budget and the recipient’s needs.

Now, let’s personalize that gift card to make it ready for gifting.

3. Personalize the Gift Card Presentation

Ulta is another CERTIFIED GIFT CARD. When you buy an Ulta gift card from Ulta, you get a free gift card holder. I would put it in one of these darling Ulta tote bags.

Delivering a gift card with "a little something extra" is my signature way of gifting, but it's entirely optional.

The "extra" can be as simple as tying a movie theater gift card to the top of a packet of microwave popcorn. Sometimes, all you need is a personal message. For instance, pairing a movie theater gift card with a note that reads, "Here's to more happy endings with you," transforms an ordinary gift card into a romantic gesture.

I'll share more gift card pairings below.

Following these three simple steps, you can deliver thoughtful gifts without breaking the bank this holiday season.

Now, let's dive into some specific examples of budget-friendly gift cards that are fun and personal while ensuring the recipient can enjoy a complete experience.
